Three hours have now passed and Basil is ignoring the fact that the drum roll has slowed to an occasional, exhausted tap, for Basil is now also finding it difficult to fulfil his role. His arm that is holding the gold key aloft is slowly but surely descending and his smile is turning into a scowl. The audience, however, remain as positive and excited as they were when Elsie first appeared.

Three days have now passed. The audience are continuing their faithful vigil but Basil has had enough. He is staring at the locked crate with utter contempt. His once raised arm now hangs limp. He looks over at the drummer boy who is lying on the stage, fast asleep. Basil’s fingers fall open and he drops the gold key to the floor. Now he turns his back on the audience, steps over the sleeping boy and walks off the stage.

Basil emerges from the theatre, blinking in the light. He hails a cab, rides silently home, steps inside his house, takes a gun from a cupboard and shoots himself dead.
